Barbara A. Sampson, MD, PhD, President
Dr. Barbara Sampson is the Vice Chair of Pathology for Strategic Initiatives and Academic Affairs and Professor in the Department of Pathology, Molecular and Cell Based Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She was the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York from 2013-2020 and was the first woman appointed to lead the Office of Chief Medical Examiner. She has been a Trustee of the ABPath since 2017 and her current responsibilities include Chairperson, Test Development and Advisory Committee for Forensic Pathology and Chairperson, Credentials Committee. She earned her Bachelor’s degree at Princeton, Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at Rockefeller University, her degree in medicine at Cornell University Medical College, and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Sampson is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Forensic Pathology and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
She served as President of the Society of Cardiovascular Pathology and is a member of the National Association of Medical Examiners, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. Dr. Sampson has published widely on forensic pathology, cardiovascular pathology, and microbiology, including 29 articles and 4 book chapters, and serves as an Associate Editor of the journal Cardiovascular Pathology. She is the recipient of the Young Investigator Award from the Society of Cardiovascular Pathology and the E.R. Squibb and Sons Senior Thesis Prize for Contribution to Scientific Research.
Mohiedean Ghofrani, MD, MBA, Vice President
Dr. Ghofrani is System Medical Director for Laboratory Services and Director of Cytopathology and Women’s Health at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver, Washington. He has been a Trustee of the ABPath since 2017 and his current responsibilities include Chairperson, Test Development and Advisory Committee for Anatomic Pathology; Chairperson, Strategic Planning Committee; and Chairperson, Practice & Training Survey Committee. He earned his medical degree in Tehran, followed by a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and fellowship in Cytopathology at Yale University. Dr. Ghofrani has subspecialty training and expertise in breast and gynecologic pathology. He holds a Master of Business Administration with a focus on healthcare from George Washington University and has a special interest in clinical informatics. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Cytopathology, and Clinical Informatics, and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
Dr. Ghofrani is active in state, national and international pathology societies, and has served as President of the Washington State Society of Pathologists, President of the Oregon Pathologists Association, Chair of the American Society of Cytopathology Budget and Finance Committee, and Vice-Chair of the College of American Pathologists Cytopathology Committee.
Kathleen G. Beavis, MD, Secretary
Kathleen G. Beavis, MD, Secretary
Dr. Beavis is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Chicago, where she directs the Clinical Microbiology and Immunology Laboratories. She began her term as a Trustee of the ABPath on January 1, 2019, and her current responsibilities include Chairperson, Test Development & Advisory Committee for Medical Microbiology; Chairperson, Test Development and Advisory Committee for Management & Informatics; and Chairperson, Nominating Committee. She earned her A.B. in Philosophy from Harvard College and was a Rotary International Graduate Fellow for studies in theology and philosophy of science at Eberhard Karls Universitaet in Tuebingen, Germany. Dr. Beavis received her M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She completed an internship in Anatomic Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital and residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and fellowship in Microbiology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. She is board certified in Clinical Pathology and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
Dr. Beavis has served and held leadership positions in several national and international professional organizations. She has received both the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Distinguished Patient Care Award from the CAP. Dr. Beavis has a strong interest in DEI initiatives and Global Health, and is the Director of the Global Health program for University of Chicago undergraduates.
Mark K. Fung, MD, PhD, Treasurer
Dr. Fung is Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Vermont. He has been a Trustee of the ABPath since 2021 and his current responsibilities include Chairperson, Test Development & Advisory Committee for Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine; Chairperson, Test Development & Advisory Committee for ABPath CertLink Clinical Pathology; Chairperson, Finance and Audit Committee; and Chairperson, Ethics and Professionalism Committee.
Dr. Fung earned his B.A. in Biology from Wesleyan University. He received both his M.D. degree and Ph.D. degree in Cellular and Molecular Pathology from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He completed two years of residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Washington University in St Louis before transferring to the University of Pittsburgh to complete his residency training and fellowship training in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine. Dr. Fung is board certified in Clinical Pathology and Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
Dr. Fung has leadership roles in other organizations to include the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies (AABB), College of American Pathologists (CAP), Vermont Medical Society and the Project Santa Fe Foundation/Clinical Lab 2.0 Initiative. He is on the editorial board for Transfusion, Transfusion Medicine Reviews, and Population Health Management, and was editor-in-chief for the 18th and 19th editions of the AABB Technical Manual. Dr. Fung received the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from the CAP.
Ritu Nayar, MD, Immediate Past President
Dr. Nayar is Professor and Executive Vice Chair of Pathology at Northwestern University, Chicago. She has been a Trustee of the ABPath since 2016 and her current responsibilities include Chairperson, Test Development and Advisory Committee for Cytopathology; Chairperson, Test Development and Advisory Committee for ABPath CertLink Anatomic Pathology; and Chairperson, Continuing Certification Committee. Dr Nayar received her MBBS and MD (Pathology) degrees from Delhi University, completed AP/CP residency and a surgical pathology fellowship at George Washington University and a cytopathology fellowship at the University of Rochester. She is ABPath certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Cytopathology and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
Dr Nayar has been an active leader in organized Pathology since she was a resident, having chaired several committees in a number of professional organizations; including serving as President of the American Society of Cytopathology and on the Executive Council of the International Academy of Cytology. She has published extensively and served as editor of the Bethesda System for Reporting Cervical Cytology, which was the model for development of other standardized terminology systems in cytopathology. Dr Nayar received the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of American Pathologists, the 2018 Papanicolaou Award from the American Society of Cytopathology, the 2018 Maurice Goldblatt Award from the International Academy of Cytology, and the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology.
Edward R. Ashwood, MD
Dr. Ashwood is a tenured Professor of Pathology at the University of Colorado. From 2016 to 2023 he served as Vice Chair of Clinical Pathology, and Director of Laboratories at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital. Prior to joining CU in 2016, he served for 30 years as a clinical pathologist on the University of Utah faculty and is the former President and CEO of ARUP Laboratories. During that time, he edited seven revisions of the Tietz Textbook of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics and the Tietz Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry.
He has been a Trustee of the ABPath since 2014 and his current responsibilities include Chairperson, Test Development and Advisory Committee for Chemical Pathology and Chairperson, Bylaws Committee. Dr. Ashwood earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and completed a Laboratory Medicine residency at the University of Washington. Dr. Ashwood is board certified in Clinical Pathology and Chemical Pathology and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
Dr. Ashwood has been actively involved in numerous medical and pathology professional organizations. He is the recipient of the 1998 Evans Award from the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists, the 2010 Outstanding Contributions in Pediatric Clinical Chemistry Award from the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), the 2011 Outstanding Contributions in Education Award from AACC, 2016 Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award, and the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of American Pathologists.
James R. Cook, MD, PhD
Dr. James Cook is the Hematopathology Section Head at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, and Professor of Pathology at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Cook began his term as a Trustee in January 2023. His current responsibilities include Chairperson, Test Development and Advisory Committee for Hematopathology. Dr. Cook is a graduate of the MD/PhD program at Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his residency training at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri and fellowship training in Hematopathology at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Cook is board certified in Anatomic Pathology and Hematopathology and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
Dr. Cook has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications in hematopathology and has participated in numerous national and international post-graduate medical education activities. He has served on multiple committees for the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and the Association for Molecular Pathology and is a recent President of the Society for Hematopathology.
Eric F. Glassy, MD
Dr. Glassy is a community pathologist and a founding member of Affiliated Pathologists Medical Group, an independent private practice group of forty pathologists. He is Laboratory Director at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center, San Pedro, CA. He has been a Trustee of the ABPath since 2016, and his current responsibilities include Chairperson, Test Development and Advisory Committee for Neuropathology and Chairperson, Communications Task Force. He is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of San Francisco and received his MD degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He completed pathology residency and hematopathology fellowship training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Glassy is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
Jeffrey D. Goldstein, MD
Dr. Goldstein is Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology at David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA and Chief of Clinical Pediatric Pathology at Mattel Children’s Hospital and Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Previously, he was a general community hospital pathologist and the pediatric pathologist at Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, FL for nearly 27 years. He has been a Trustee since 2016 and his current responsibilities include Chairperson, Test Development and Advisory Committee for Pediatric Pathology and Chairperson, Committee on Examinations.
Dr. Goldstein graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania and received his MD degree from Emory University, where he was elected to the AOA honor society. He completed residency training at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and pulmonary pathology fellowship at Brigham & Women’s and Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Goldstein is ABPath certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Pediatric Pathology, voluntarily recertified in 2013 and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
Dr. Goldstein has been actively involved in numerous medical and pathology professional organizations and served as President, Councilor, chair and member of several committees of the Society for Pediatric Pathology. He is a Co-Principal Investigator for the Children’s Oncology Group.
Julie D. Kingery, MD
Dr. Kingery is Clinical Associate Professor, Vice Chair of Clinical Pathology, and Laboratory Director in the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Prior to her position at the University of Florida, she was a clinical pathologist and Associate Medical Director of a high-volume reference laboratory for Kaiser Permanente in Northern California. Dr. Kingery began her term as a Trustee in January 2023. Her current responsibilities include Chairperson, Continuing Certification Advisory Committee and Vice Chairperson, Test Development and Advisory Committee for Management and Informatics.
Dr. Kingery earned a B.S. in Biology at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA; graduated medical school and completed residency training at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Following residency, Dr. Kingery completed a molecular genetic pathology fellowship at the Oregon Health & Sciences University and a medical microbiology fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Kingery is board certified in Clinical Pathology, Medical Microbiology, and Molecular Genetic Pathology and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
Dr. Kingery has been involved in national professional societies throughout her career serving on committees for the College of American Pathologists and the American Society of Clinical Pathology. She also served on the ABPath’s Continuing Certification Advisory Committee.
Jennifer Laudadio, MD
Dr. Jennifer Laudadio is Professor and Chair in the Department of Pathology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, AR. She is a recipient of the Aubrey J. Hough Jr, MD, Distinguished Chair in Pathology. She serves as Director of the Laboratory and Pathology Service Line for UAMS Health. Dr. Laudadio also served as a Pathology Residency Program Director and is a member of the UAMS Graduate Medical Education Committee. Dr. Laudadio began her term as a Trustee in January 2023. Her current responsibilities include Chairperson, Test Development & Advisory Committee for Molecular Genetics. Dr. Laudadio earned a B.A. in Chemistry from Wake Forest University and her M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia. She completed an Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina and Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship at Oregon Health and Sciences University. Dr. Laudadio is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Molecular Genetics and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
She is a Molecular Pathology Section Editor for Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and has served on numerous committees for the College of American Pathologists and the Association for Molecular Pathology. She is a former President of the College of American Pathologists Foundation and served ex-officio on the CAP Board of Governors.
Javarro Russell, PhD
Dr. Javarro Russell currently serves as the Senior Director for the Admissions Testing Service at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). In this distinguished role, he oversees the strategic direction of all aspects of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and MCAT Prep portfolio. These areas include business operations, research & development, test security, communications, and derivative products. Prior to his tenure at the AAMC, Dr. Russell has served in leadership roles at the National Board of Medical Examiners and the Educational Testing Service. His service to these organizations focused on measurement and assessment design issues in higher education, as well as business development. He has also assisted institutions in identifying solutions for assessing and measuring student learning outcomes, such as content knowledge, critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving.
Dr. Russell began his term as the Public Member Trustee of the ABPath on January 1, 2024. His current responsibilities include Chairperson, In Training Competency Based Formative Assessment Working Group. He holds two degrees from Norfolk State University, a Historically Black College and University. His PhD in Assessment and Measurement is from James Madison University.
Dr. Russell has previously served as the Board Member and President of the Northeastern Educational Research Association. He has also held several committee leadership roles for the American Association of Educational Research.
Matthew J. Wasco, MD
Dr. Matthew Wasco is an anatomic and clinical pathologist with IHA Pathology and Laboratory Management, serving Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital and multiple associated facilities in Ann Arbor, MI, and other parts of southeast Michigan. Since joining IHA pathology in 2009, Dr. Wasco has been a laboratory director for multiple facilities and a section leader for various parts of the clinical laboratory. Dr. Wasco was appointed a Trustee in 2021. His current responsibilities include Chairperson, Joint Policy Committee for Dermatopathology and co-chairperson of the Dermatopathology Test Development and Advisory Committee. Dr. Wasco earned a B.A. in Chemistry at Carleton College, graduated medical school and a post-sophomore fellowship in pathology at the University of Massachusetts, and completed pathology residency and fellowship in Genitourinary Surgical Pathology at the University of Michigan. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and is participating in the Continuing Certification Program.
Dr. Wasco has served on committees for the American Society of Clinical Pathology and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, as well as local hospital administrative responsibilities and the Michigan Society of Pathologists. He had also previously served on ABPath’s Continuing Certification Advisory Committee.
Gary W. Procop, MD, MS, MEd, Chief Executive Officer
Prior to Dr. Procop’s position with ABPath, Dr. Procop was a Clinical Microbiology Medical Director and Infectious Disease Pathologist at the Cleveland Clinic. He held the Belinda Yen-Lieberman PhD and James Lieberman MD Endowed Chair in Clinical Microbiology, was the Chair of Clinical Pathology, Chair of Molecular Pathology, and the Vice Chair for Education.
Dr. Procop was a Trustee of the ABPath from 2007-2018 and served as President in 2016, Vice President in 2015 and Secretary in 2013-2014. His responsibilities at the ABPath included Chair of the Test Development and Advisory Committee for Microbiology, the Ethics and Professionalism Committee, and the Maintenance of Certification Committee. In August 2019, he was honored for his many contributions to the ABPath as a Life Trustee.
Dr. Procop received a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University, followed by MD and MS degrees at Marshall University School of Medicine. He completed residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Duke University Medical Center and fellowship training in Clinical Microbiology at the Mayo Clinic. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Medical Microbiology, and is participating in Continuing Certification.
Dr. Procop serves on the ABMS Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, the College of American Pathologists, the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
