Definitions

Applicant

An applicant is a physician who has never before applied for a certifying examination, or whose application was previously not approved for that examination.

Board Eligible Candidates

When an applicant has received notice from the ABPath that the Credentials Committee has approved their application to take the ABPath examination, the applicant is now a candidate for certification and can declare himself/herself to be “board eligible”.

Registration

Registration is required for any individual whose application for an examination was approved, but the individual did not take or pass the examination. Registration consists of completing the online registration and certificate forms and paying the required fee.

Be sure to note the following if applying for an exam:

  • Primary certifications exam(s) are administered in the spring and fall of each year.
  • Subspecialty certification exams are administered in the fall of each year.
  • Applicants for Spring Primary examinations must complete training by July 1st.
  • Applicants for Fall Primary examinations must complete training by November 1st.
  • Applicants for Subspecialty examinations must complete training by October 1st.
  • All applicants, candidates, and diplomates must hold a currently valid, full and unrestricted medical license. Training and temporary licenses do not meet this requirement.
