Our Commitment

At the American Board of Pathology, we are committed to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our discussions, decisions, and work products. We believe that embracing and presenting diverse experiences enhances our ability to serve the public effectively and enriches the field of pathology. By valuing and integrating varied perspectives, we ensure that our certification standards and lifelong competency program reflect our society’s broad spectrum, serve the needs of our diverse patient populations, and honor the tenets of patient-centered care.

Our philosophy of diversity, equity and inclusion is not just an aspirational goal but a practical approach that supports a more inclusive future in pathology, to best serve pathologists, patients and others who rely on the meaningful credential of board certification. We are dedicated to embedding these principles into the very foundation of our assessments. This commitment extends to the ABPath Trustees, staff and subject matter experts who design and create these assessments, ensuring that diverse viewpoints are considered throughout our work. By doing so, we prepare our trainees to deliver the highest standard of care to all individuals, regardless of their background. This assurance advances the pathology profession and strengthens the trust and quality of care that the public and patients rightfully expect from us.

There is progress to be made and we are taking action and implementing programs to encourage diversity, equity and inclusion within our Board; ABPath has recently eliminated the use of race in our exam questions.
