A Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties

A- A A+

In ongoing efforts to improve Continuing Certification (CC), formerly known as Maintenance of Certification (MOC), the American Board of Pathology (ABP), has collaborated with the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) to develop a longitudinal assessment pilot known as ABPath CertLink. ABPath CertLink leverages advances in technology to assess medical knowledge and judgment using a convenient, continuous, and dynamic program that incorporates learning into the assessment process. The ABP heard your concerns about the current CC examination and its relevance to your practice. ABPath CertLink will offer pertinent assessment to support diplomates’ lifelong learning.

ABPath CertLink longitudinal assessment will likely become an alternative to the once-every-10-year CC Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment, and Skills examination. After successful beta testing that focused on system functionality, the ABP will be launching the pilot program on July 2, 2018. The length of the pilot will be three to five years, during which time we will:

  • Refine technology infrastructure
  • Gather feedback about the design of the program and participant experience
  • Perform research to evaluate the pilot’s success, validity, and reliability as an alternative to the current examination
  • Develop a large item bank of questions to make the program relevant to our diplomates

To have enough data to assess the use of ABPath CertLink as an alternative to the CC Part III exam in the future, we are asking diplomates to voluntarily participate in the pilot. For more information about the requirements and incentives for ABPath CertLink go to:

ABPath CertLink will launch on July 2, 2018. Your participation will give you a voice and active role in creating the next generation of CC Assessment. To register, log in to your PATHway account before May 18, 2018, click on the CertLink tab at the top, and follow the instructions.
